Growing up, my mother shared a story that has stayed with me throughout my life, shaping my values and the work I do today. Like many Somali families, my parents were nomadic people who depended on their livestock for survival. During a severe drought, most nomadic families, including ours, lost their herds, and life became a daily struggle, especially when it came to providing for children.

One day, my father visited a friend who gave him a goat to slaughter for our family. On his way home, he passed by an orphaned family, who had not eaten in days. Realizing that their father had passed away and left them without support, my father made a selfless decision—he gave them the goat. He returned home empty-handed, and when my mother asked about his visit, he explained what had happened.

Surprised by his generosity, my mother asked why he would give away their only source of food, especially when his children were hungry. He explained, "For my children, I can always find help. But for these orphans, there is no one left to care for them." My mother, moved by his words, said, "You are right. God will provide for us."

That story has stayed with me ever since, inspiring me to live with kindness and to pay it forward whenever I can. My Orphan Mothers Project is a way of honoring my parents' legacy of generosity and compassion. It is an invitation to help transform the lives of orphaned mothers and their children by offering support when they need it most.
